Although quite skimpy tome for a biography of such a colourful artist (less than 230 pages), Newkey-Burden does well to present the life of Winehouse and her musical prowess in a sympathetic tone. As a fan of Winehouse, I appreciate the fact that the author stays on the moderate and supportive side of her career.
It would be easy for any writer to stray into listing her many faults and flaws, instead Newkey-Burden stays respectful and, whilst acknowledging issues and problems, his focus remains on her talent, collaborations and productivity rather than rustling up another media frenzy regarding some of Winehouse’s headstrong disruptive traits.
